I Just Graduated & My Degree Is Irrelevant

Posted on June 16, 2022June 16, 2022 by Ashleigh Robertson

“My degree is not landing me the position!”

“I just graduated and my degree isn’t a qualifier!”

“Employers want more?!”

“This degree is NO help!”

You just graduated and your degree is irrelevant! Or so you think. So, you’re job hunting and every ad you come across is looking for 1-3 years of experience, a master’s degree, and references from CEOs of top companies in the world. You just spent four years (minimum) working on your degree and you finally finished it, yet it’s the least interesting thing on your resume. We all have to learn this lesson post-grad: your degree is just that- it is a degree. It is not an immediate qualifier; it is not a golden egg. Yes, it stings. Yes, it sucks.

WHAT YOUR DEGREE IS

  • Evidence of your ability to complete something
  • Evidence of your commitment to a specific industry
  • Evidence of your ability to learn new things
  • Evidence of your ability to survive the learning curve
  • Evidence of your ability to successfully convey the knowledge in your head

WHAT YOUR DEGREE IS NOT

  • Experience

REST ASSURE!

No matter how many people tell you that you do not need a degree, it does give you an advantage! No, you don’t necessarily need a degree to start a business. Yes, you can learn most things on the internet. However, to obtain a professional position, a degree has never hurt anyone. Most employers have sought higher education, certifications, and trainings. They understand being fresh out of university or college.

  • Your degree was NOT a waste of time. It is NOT irrelevant.
  •  It is the best excuse for any employment gap.
  • It replaces all the odd jobs on your resume– though you can still include them.
  • It sets your resume apart from all the other entry level resumes that also have no experience.

YOU’RE LOOKING AT THIS WRONG

  • Don’t see your post grad life as a continuation of ANYTHING you’ve every done.
  • The real world is nothing like college.
  • The internet is NOT real and is in no way a depiction of what building a career looks like. Ween yourself off of your preconcieved notions.

YOUR JOURNEY BEGINS NOW

Understand that after graduation, almost everyone is in the same boat. We are all in store for a reality check. That is a part of the journey.

  • Post grad life is a FRESH START.
  • Rome wasn’t built in a day. An effective, long lasting career takes time to build.
  • You are BEGINNING AGAIN.
  • You gave your degree 4+ years. Give your career THE SAME RESPECT, PATIENCE, & DETERMINATION
  • Regain your motivation and fight for your future.
  • If you consider your degree irrelevant, so will everyone else. Cherish its value, and honor the blood, sweat, and tears it took to obtain it by giving your career all you’ve got!
