“I want a second job but God doesn’t approve!” “I want to hustle more but God won’t let me!” “I need a side hustle!” “I don’t know if God wants me to work here!”Everyone has multiple streams of income these days- a second job, a budding new business, or a draining of your savings, retirement or Roth.
So should I have one? Well, let’s see:
REASONS TO GET A SECOND JOB
- Because your primary job isn’t enough. If you’ve been living check to check or you’re behind on bills, getting a second job would no doubt alleviate some of that pain.
- To afford luxuries and pleasantries. Needs are met, bills are paid, but there is nothing left over for the fun stuff. A second income, though it would require more time, would allow you to enjoy some of the luxuries that make life more tolerable.
- To use your free time being “productive’. You have your primary job and financially you are set, but you’re one of those workaholics who feel lazy for watching TV while you’re clocked out. You still have some fight in you and could stand a few extra dollars to alleviate that guilt.
- It’s the only way to break into the next tax bracket. You don’t have a profitable trade, you didn’t go to college, you have tremendous debt, or you’re very unlikely to be getting a raise any time soon. The only way to bring more money in is to go get it.
- To feel like change is happening. A second job will make you feel like you are progressing in life. Your personal projects are at a standstill, your music career hasn’t shot off yet and your brand hasn’t blown up yet. Going to and fro to work, putting in hours for your hobbies and projects but nothing is visibly happening. A new job, more money, more hustling, and grinding, and more sleepless nights will make you feel productive. These things will you the results quicker than your personal projects or infant business can.
Each reason to get a second job is valid. And while everyone and their mother is hiring, getting a job is not that hard. So what is stopping you? If it isn’t landing the job, salary satisifcation, what is it? Apply and interview until your heart is content, work until you are satisfied.

WHAT’S HOLDING YOU BACK?
I’ll take a guess. God is holding you back. Does God want me to work more? Why would He ever say no?
- God is not fond of the work environment you are attempting to enter. The Holy Spirit is warning you not to take this job. He assures you this environment will change who you are, it will change how you think and it will disrupt your evolution.
- He is not fond of the hours you may be working. This job will be taking valuable time away from the projects God has assigned to you.
- He does not approve of the effect that this job or schedule may have on your mind, body, or spirit. If you get a second job, if you give your free time to Ceasar, you will not remain as healthy as you are now. Some sacrifices have to be made, your spirit’s peace being one of them
- He is trying to save you from getting comfortable with this extra money and getting stuck at a job He has not planned for you to have. God has greater things destined for you than this job you are filling an application out for right now. This will only deter you from your divine work. If you like this little bit of new money too much, you will never leave. You won’t have the time for the assignments that will give you real wealth, comfort, or impact.
You’ve got your reasons to get a job, and you’ve got your reasons not to. So what do you trust? Do you trust God enough to bank on a future you’re not even certain God promised you? Or do you satisfy your flesh, your ego, your fear, or your doubt, and thrust yourself into a different unknown?
Both these futures are up in the air. Taking the second job does not mean your entire world will crumble. It does mean that you may forfeit an even better future. One outcome is going to be merely good or bad, and the other is going to be amazing. You may be hearing different voices right now, one second the Holy Spirit is unsettled and raging, the next it seems He’s withdrawn himself- there is no peace, only terrifying silence.
This means the answer is up to you.
Here is a scripture to help you weigh your options:
Ezra 9:11 “You have through your servants the prophets, saying” The land you are entering to possess is an impure land. The surrounding peoples have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness by their impurity and detestable practices… Never seek their peace or prosperity, so that you will be strong eat the good things of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your sons forever…”
This scripture is a warning and a promise. It is absolutely fine to be concerned with your finances, wants more independence, or desire more money! It’s natural, it is actually wise! Does God want me to work more? Of course, He does, but sometimes He wants to you to do more personal work like getting fit and healthy, volunteering more, spending more time with family, or working harder at our hobbies and assignments. Do not use the world’s map as a way to obtain God’s blessings. Everyone may swear by their part-time job, but you are not them. If you do as they do, you will sacrifice more, you will forfeit more because you have more to lose. As stated in Ezra 9:11 God’s peace and prosperity will lead you to generational wealth.
This isn’t a campaign against side hustles, but when God wants us to do something, we will not be troubled. Those conflicting feelings, that grief, is an indication that the Holy Spirit wants to steer you in the opposite direction.
I am currently battling this decision, with an interview at 2:30 pm that I’ve already canceled. I could call them back and reschedule. Who knows.
In the end, if you are in God’s will, any door you try to go through that God has not ordained, He will close.
UPDATE: I rescheduled the interview, was enticed by the numbers and pay. Ultimately I decided not to take the job and to focus on the assignments God has placed on my heart. Something tells me it will pay off soon.
